Sustainability

A small footprint, on purpose.

A one-person software company does not have a factory or a fleet. It still makes choices that add up: what the software demands of hardware, where data goes, how long products stay supported, and what gets printed. Here is what we do, and what we do not claim.

Lightweight by design

Our products are built to need as little as possible. The company website and the Part 107 Prep study site are static pages with self-hosted fonts and no third-party scripts. The Part 107 Prep app runs entirely on the user's phone, so there is no server running day and night waiting for it. Public Works Safety Training has a browser edition with nothing to install and a full platform that runs on a small server the department already has. Less data moving around means less power used, and less for anyone to keep secure.

Runs on what you already own

We do not require new hardware. Everything we ship targets ordinary phones and computers, works in a current browser, and is tested on older devices. A department should not have to replace a working laptop to run safety training on it.

Less paper, printed when it matters

Safety training records, certificates, compliance reports, and incident investigations live as digital records with a printable version when a signature or a filing requires one. That replaces the binder of sign-in sheets without pretending the binder was never useful: the printable incident report still has signature lines.

Built to last

The most wasteful software is the kind that gets abandoned. We publish a content date in every product, keep products supported for as long as they are in use, and avoid dependencies that force a rewrite every few years. Our products are plain HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python, chosen because they will still run a decade from now.

How we operate

  • No office lease and no commute for the work itself. We travel to a customer when being there matters.
  • Hardware stays in service for as long as it receives security updates, then goes to a certified electronics recycler.
  • Documents are digital by default. We print contracts when a customer's process requires a wet signature.

Community

Part 107 Prep is free, including the mobile app. We set aside time every year for pro bono work for nonprofits that serve veterans, and we release the code for most of what we build under open licenses so the work outlives any one company.

What we do not claim

We are not carbon neutral and we do not buy offsets. We have not measured our emissions, because a measurement of a one-person remote company would say more about the electric grid than about us. We will publish numbers when we have numbers worth publishing. If a customer's procurement process requires a sustainability questionnaire, we will fill it out accurately, including the blanks.
