A small software company built around public works.
Tompkins Software Systems LLC is a veteran-owned Illinois company. We build software for the departments that keep the lights on, the water running, and the streets open, for the small businesses and nonprofits around them, and for people with an idea who need someone to build it.
Who we are
Tompkins Software Systems started with a simple observation: most of the software sold to public works departments is priced and designed for organizations far larger than the ones that need it. Annual safety training gets tracked in a spreadsheet, incident reports get filed in a drawer, and the one person who understands the project list is the one who is on vacation.
The first of our tools were built on nights and weekends to solve those problems for a municipal public works department with electric, environmental, and public services divisions. In October 2026 Tompkins Software Systems LLC was organized in Illinois to publish that work properly: under a company name, with support behind it, and on the Apple App Store and Google Play under organization accounts.
We are deliberately small. Every product on this site was written by the people who answer its support requests. We would rather publish a price than schedule a sales call, and we would rather ship a tool that does one job well than a platform that promises to do everything.
Mission
Build dependable, affordable software for public works departments, local governments, small businesses, and nonprofits, help people with an idea turn it into a platform they own, and stand behind all of it for as long as it is in use.
Vision
Every public works crew, whatever the size of its budget, has software that fits the way the work is actually done.
Values
Plain language
If a crew lead cannot understand it on a phone in a truck, it is not finished. Our products, our documentation, and this website are written to be read, not decoded.
Ship what we would use
Every product started as a tool we needed ourselves. We run our own projects in Painless Project Management.
Respect the data
We collect the least we can and the customer owns their records. Part 107 Prep keeps everything on the user's phone. Public Works Safety Training runs on the department's own server or browser, not ours.
Honest pricing
No subscriptions required to keep using what you bought. No tiers designed to push you up a level. The price on the quote is the price.
Finish the job
Long support windows, dated content, and a written after-action review at the end of every engagement: what we planned, what happened, and what we would change.
How we work
Every engagement starts with a one-page charter. It names the sponsor and the lead, says what we are building and why, defines what done looks like, sets the budget, and sets the dates. Until that page is complete, there is no project. It is the same method we ship in Painless Project Management, because we built the tool for ourselves first.
While the work is under way you get a two-minute update every week: schedule, budget, and whether we need help from you. Red is not failure; hiding red is. When the work is delivered you get a written after-action review: what was planned, what actually happened, why, what to sustain, and what to improve.
